Three days had passed since the kiss.
Three days since battle, blood, and the sound of something ancient laughing beneath the Kingdom of the Dead. Three days since Theron had held my face between his hands as if I were both crown and catastrophe, and kissed me like a man who had spent a thousand years learning restraint only to lose it in one breath.
Three days since the gold appeared.
I stood before the mirror in my chamber and hated it for being honest. The black veins of my bloodline still climbed over my hands, delicate as inked roots beneath the skin. They had frightened villagers. They had frightened priests. They had frightened me, once. Now they looked almost familiar.
The gold was worse.
It threaded through the black in hair-thin lines, luminous and patient, shining brightest at my wrists. Not a wound. Not a blessing. Something alive enough to answer when I touched it.
A knock came at the door.
“Seraphina?” Theron’s voice passed through the wood without force, and still the room seemed to bend around it. “May I enter?”
That was the trouble with a husband who was also Death’s king. He could have commanded half the realm to open for him. Instead he asked permission, and the tenderness of it made my chest hurt.
